Social Responsibility in Business

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be defined as a business model that helps a company to be socially accountable to its employees, its stakeholders and the wider communities in which it operates. As ambassadors of CSR, companies can be conscious of the impact of their business behaviour and operations on economic, social and environmental trends.

In particular, a company’s responsibility to care for its people, both in the workplace and in surrounding communities, has received increasing attention in the fields below:

  1.          Mental Health and Well-being

Ensuring the happiness and wellness of employees is a crucial aspect of managing a global workforce, which can highly enhance the productivity of organisations and reduce healthcare costs. The physical wellness of employees should be understood not only as lack of disease, but mostly as a state in which the employee feels motivated and inspired, and can in turn contribute to the work environment in a productive, creative and effective way. Similarly, mental wellness is achieved when people within an organisation take ownership of their talents and abilities, harnessing their capacity to cope with stress and work positively and productively. Overall, improved employee mental and physical health can highly increase productivity, reduce injury, improve safety compliance and deliver a truly global vision of duty of care.

  2. -          Sustainability and Social Impact

In addition to Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S), sustainability reflects the wider spectrum of an organisation’s practice of reporting publicly and transparently on its social, environmental and economic impact towards the goal of sustainable development. Implementing sustainability on a global scale has evolved in response to heightened pressure on organisations to disclose information. In order for a business to thrive in the face of ever-changing and increasing global challenges, it is necessary to provide protection towards the social environment where companies operate, by insuring compliance towards environmental legislation, promoting wellness initiatives and positive engagement for local communities.
